deck the halls with doggie daycare…

here are some doggie daycare guidelines, some questions to ask, thanks to Wags and Wiggles doggie daycare in Orange county, California…

we have visited a few doggie daycares in our travels and only liked one… one, did not have enough space for the dogs, another did not supervise the dogs, and another would not let us visit at all, tsk tsk…  if the place stinks, staff is rude and unfriendly and the dogs are running wild without supervision, run do not walk to another doggie daycare place!!!

beware and take care of your doggies this holiday season and always…

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN CONSIDERING A DOG DAYCARE

The following questions are intended to help you decide on a dog daycare that’s right for you and your dog. Because there are so many differing opinions and levels of expertise, we encourage you to visit and observe each option you are considering before taking your own dog.
1. SCREENING PROCESS
What are the steps in an evaluation?
What are the qualifications of the evaluator?
Do the dogs have to be friendly with strangers?
Do the dogs have to be friendly with children?
What if a dog is collar shy?
2. SUPERVISION
How many dogs are allowed in the space?
What is the ratio of people to dogs?
Is there someone with the dogs at all times?
What is the experience of the staff?
Is there training involved? If so, what kind?
Are volunteers allowed to supervise?
3. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
What kind of techniques are used to control the group?
❏ Name recognition and prevention (calling the dogs out and rewarding)
❏ Treats for appropriate behavior
❏ Shouting/yelling*
❏ Time outs (crate, pen, other room)
❏ Squirt bottles*
❏ Physical “correction” (alpha rolls, collar checks, muzzle grabs, etc.)*
❏ Bitter Apple/flavored deterrents*
❏ Electronic shock and/or citronella collars*
*CAUTION: There are side effects to aversives for many dogs. You may want to research these fully.
Are the dogs allowed to bark? What is done to avoid excessive barking?
What is done about “bullying” behavior?
What is done about “mounting” behavior?
What is done about resource guarding (toys/treats)?
How are small dogs protected? Are they supervised separately?
Are the dogs able to run and/or play fetch?
What kind of toys are allowed?
Is there a nap time?
4. CLEANLINESS
Is there a designated “potty area”? Is it plumbed (able to be fully sanitized)?
Where are the dogs allowed to eliminate?
What happens if a dog has an “accident” inside?
How often are the floors and walls cleaned?
Smell check — Will my dog bring home the aroma?
5. SAFETY/ENVIRONMENT
Are there double entries and exits?
Is the fencing safe for small dogs? For jumping dogs?
Is fencing exposed to passers-by (bicyclists, joggers, children, etc)?
Are electrical cords kept out of dogs’ reach?
Is there “playground” equipment for dogs to climb on?
What is done in case of veterinary emergency?
6. SPECIAL NEEDS
What if my dog has allergies?
What if I am late to pick up my dog?
What if my dog is extremely shy with other dogs?
7. CUSTOMER SERVICE
What kind of “report” do I get at the end of the day?
What other services are available?
What are the payment options?
Will the staff make training recommendations?
8. REASONS FOR EXPULSION
What gets a dog “kicked out” of daycare?

dogs just wanna zoom zoom zoom

Cici, like most dogs, loves to run.  Almost every day, she zooms around the park down the street or runs to me when she’s done rolling in the grass, sniffing everything and doing her business. I used to try to walk her an hour a day or make sure she got exercise by playing with other dogs. But since my legs/knees hurt from arthritis, it’s been hard for me to do that.

Just found out that there is a dog gym in town, Pacific Grove. It’s called the Zoom Room and they offer agility, play groups, therapy dog training, Canine Good Citizen classes, as well as social activities such as Dog Birthday Parties, a Bark Mitzvah, Yappy Hours and Doggy Disco  plus eco-friendly toys and healthy dog food and treats. It’s open 11 to 8 during the week.

The Zoom Room says that this is an indoor alternative to the dog park. An indoor dog park where mean dogs are outlawed, no flaky owners are allowed to sit on their cell phones while their dogs wreak havoc, and all of the other complaints people have about dog parks.

Becoming a Zoom Room Member and enjoying Open Gym is as easy as scheduling a quick 15 minute evaluation. So if you’re not yet a member, you can either enroll in one of our group classes or simply come in for an evaluation.

http://www.zoomroomonline.com/dog-training-classes/obedience-training.html

I did not know that there was such a thing but apparently, the dog gym business is booming. The time has come for all good pooches to work out, swim, dog yoga and more.  Since so many dogs (and cats) are obese (like their owners) in this country, putting a dog on a diet and exercise regime is just what the vet ordered. And studies show that working out with a friend increases the odds that you’ll stick with the program. Some human gyms have added doggie classes for pet and owner.

According to the Association of Canine Water Therapy, there are 25 registered dog gyms across the country.

Some gyms have pools, others just have dog agility equipment, treadmills and such.

What to Look For in an Exercise Facility

Whether it is a facility that is made only for exercise, or it is a dog day care that includes a daily schedule for exercise, make sure to ask for a tour of the facility before you make a commitment to use their services. Get a good look at the equipment, the yards, the kennels, and any other place your dog will be spending time. Make sure that the people running the facility are accredited for recognizing and treating emergencies in animals and that they are very familiar with the physiology of a dog. Also, make sure that they use positive reinforcement training.

You can also construct a doggie jungle gym for use in your backyard.

http://www.ehow.com/info_8543241_jungle-gyms-dogs.html

Before you start, take into account your dog’s endurance level, age and temperament. Older dogs, obese dogs, and young puppies should start slow and build endurance over time.

Doggie Yoga

Your dog does the “downward facing dog” pose every day, also known as the play bow, with rear in the air and the front paws/arms are outstretched in front. Find a class near you or get a video, learn the poses and Ommmmm you go, inside or outside on a flat, grassy area in the back yard or park.

Dancing with the Paws

Dancing with dogs is a competitive sport but you can jazzercise with Fido at home. Just put on some loud music and rock n roll. Shake your booty.

A Bicycle Built for Fido

Biking is the way some people roll. My roommates both bike everywhere but so far have not been able to convince either of them to take Cici along for the ride. She loves to run and would enjoy the brisk pace of a bicycle ride. When she sees other neighbors bicycling, she just naturally wants to join in the fun. Or she’s barking at the motion of the wheels. Be careful if you bike that the dog’s leash does not get into the spokes. Take some safety precautions. You can outfit your bike to roll with your canine for safety. Start with short distances, in low-traffic, low-pedestrian areas. Talk to your dog, or sing, and advance, when ready to biking with your dog off-leash, running next to you.

http://celiasue.wordpress.com/2010/10/27/biking-with-your-dog/

When Cici and I went shopping and I was in the scooter cart, she LOVED LOVED LOVED scooting/running next to me the whole time. And I am a crazy bumper car type driver in those things. But she got very good, very fast, and learned how to avoid any collisions with me. Smart girl.

Roller Skating/Blading

You could also have your dog take the lead and go skating with them ahead of you. Be careful !

Occupy the Shelters!!!

I LOVE the Adoption Centers model… and had an idea last night… Imagine, what if there were Adoption Centers and housing for both people and pets… homeless people would have decent housing, NOT a shelter where they have NO privacy nor dignity, a job to do, get a pet ready to be adopted, gardening (grow food), adoption center jobs and more… Imagine the miracles for both pets and people… Americans Need Jobs. Americans LOVE animals.

Homeless vets, seniors, all kinds of people could become well again through the power of LOVE… pets make wonderful companions… Both the pets and people and communities would benefit.  Similar to the Pit Bulls and Parolees concept at Villa Lobos… except I see smaller houses, maybe 5 or 6 bedrooms, and/or manufactured homes on land with Adoption Centers similar to Doggie Daycare Centers plus the Rehab Centers… Win win win win win win win…

And what if these Adoption Center places also fed the pets THE BEST PET FOODS, not the cheapest, fed the community pets with the best nutrition, the Rehab Centers could have Holistic Vets on board, there could be a doggie gym for agility, a Doggie Spa, a Shop to buy goodies to support the Adoption Center, a doggie pool, and more… No more doggie discrimination. No more pit bulls being put to sleep for how they look and/or because they are pit bulls.

Dreaming… Instead of coming from a mental / emotional place of Scarcity and we have to accept whatever is donated, shabby, crappy and poor mentality, this is revolutionary in concept and scope… a whole different way of THINKING and IMPLEMENTING… Something, places to BE PROUD OF, Places of Dignity and Health and Well Being for People and Pets… Imagine…

IT is TIME to CHANGE the status quo killing factories shelters into an Adoption Centers model…

Get rid of the Greed… and Hate… Eliminate the Greed and Hate…

That means WE have to change too… Not just Point Fingers and Blame, Accuse and Make Wrong… you cannot change something via hate… only LOVE makes a difference… honey works with bees, vinegar not so much… does not mean to sugarcoat, but learn compassion, forgiveness, and LISTEN…

I do NOT understand why someone would rather kill animals than find homes for them and save lives… AND I also know that when accusations are thrown at them, people resist, shut their ears, get defensive, run away, shut down…

There has to be a Win Win Win for ALL…

Am reminded of John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune, years ago he walked away from his family. And he had a dream about a cow. He writes about this in Diet for a New America. And what impressed me so much is how he got to go to factory farms for three whole months. He visited these horrible places where they not only slaughter animals but keep them in horrendous conditions. And he was there with an OPEN HEART and just Listened to the people who worked there. Somehow he was able to do that. Listen with an Open Compassionate Heart although he was repelled by what the people DID every day to the animals. Read the book, Get Inspired and Find Creative Solutions.

Create a Vision of the Adoption Centers you want and Make it Happen/Implement Step by Step by Step… Until It is Done… Manifest…

RIP Ace, this type of “accident”, killing the wrong homeless animal, or someone’s pet happens every day in every state in this country. Until we replace killing shelters with true Adoption Centers, where animals live happily in a healthy, cage free, communal environment and be socialized to prepare them for their new furrever homes. We can SAVE THEM ALL, not just 90% !

Please read a lot more and enjoy some videos at http://www.ShelterRevolution.Org

Let’s CHANGE this rotten system altogether by acknowledging the Past, weaknesses, corruption, and greed and HEAL ourselves and others…

Like the Fb page is http://www.facebook.com/ShelterRevolution

Shelter Revolution is the marketing effort to tell the world about the ADOPTION CENTER model. This innovative new facility plan brings ‘customers’ in with a whole new approach to displaying adoptable dogs and cats. It creates a calm, enjoyable atmosphere in a “touch and feel” setting.Introducing a new concept called “rehab,” dogs and cats not ready for adoption are sent into the care of local rehabbers to prepare them for return to the Adoption Center and placement.Read all about the other concepts that make up this whole new approach called the Adoption Center model at www.shelterrevolution.org

We need fun places where customers can go to see happy, healthy animals in large groups. Dogs and cats are SOCIAL animals, not meant to be isolated. For those animals who can’t get along, the Adoption Center model provides for rehab. The process of rehab will bring local rescuers and shelter workers together.

are you an extremist LIFE SAVER????

unreal…

http://yesbiscuit.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/killing-apologists-just-want-their-lives-back/

Rescue friends- if you have a plea that needs more attention, and exposure, pls be sure to post to the people for paws network. Thanks!

https://www.facebook.com/pages/People-for-Paws-Network/119735384716987

are you an extremist LIFE SAVER????

Are you an “extremist”? Take the quiz.

  1. I want the killing to end.
  2. I think it is wrong for shelters to neglect and abuse animals.
  3. If other communities can end the killing of savable animals, I believe my community should also.
  4. I care about animals and because I care about animals, I do not want harm to come to them.
  5. I believe in democracy and engaging my elected officials to create social change.

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are an “extremist” according to the ASPCA. If you answered “No” to all of these questions, the ASPCA thinks you’ll make a great shelter director and they will fight to defend and protect you.

if you have not read this, please DO…

http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=7390

Now here the ASPCA has (not) kindly but nevertheless has a list telling us what to do Step by Step…. Are you on board?  The Patrick Movement is a powerful force to be reckoned with and animal lovers CAN CHANGE THE WORLD FOR THE BETTER.

WHAT KIND OF COUNTRY DO YOU WANT TO LIVE IN?

WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO YOU WANT YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS TO LIVE IN????

Are you with me???  Consider this your Marching Orders :-)   Go Forth and SAVE LIVES !!!!

police and puppies and peaceful solutions, oh my

Police making friends with puppies at #occupymonterey Camp, compassion needed everywhere…  tis the season to cooperate and make friends and be jolly, right…

at first, it was all warm and fuzzy, exciting and fun, even invigorating and it seemed as though most Americans, even politicians and the White House agreed with the Occupy Wall Street protesters… but then we’ve all been seeing the police brutality, 5,000+ protesters arrested and evicted and pepper sprayed meanwhile NO Wall Street criminals have been charged nor arrested… maybe that is just a coincidence (I do not believe in coincidences, do you?) …

so do you think that what the media is showing YOU is ALL that is going on everywhere??? like the above, peaceful camps with cooperating police and cities are happening across the nation…and NOT being shown on TV…in newspapers… hmmmm…

could it be that the TV/media/government want citizens to STOP no more protests no more showing up and no more dissenting, making noise, being visible, so they are scaring taxpayers who have the right to dissent/protest in public spaces with all of the coverage of pepper spraying, batons and arrests, hmmmmm… could that be right here in America, home of the Free and the Brave or is it Home of the Free and the Slaves???

gee whiz, we will let you decide…

but first, a new law in Nevada has led to a 75% decrease in foreclosures because they are holding the banks accountable, gee golly willickers, could it be that simple/easy, YES…

http://www.latimes.com/business/realestate/la-fi-nevada-foreclosure-20111210,0,5514369.story

a coalition of Occupiers and other groups are Occupying foreclosed homes and/or stopping foreclosures and even putting up tents in their own yards…

poignant, how occupiers are helping homeless, mayors/police/government NOT so much

Author Naomi Wolf made a brilliant suggestion for people to book a room at their local City Hall, where residents have the RIGHT to call a meeting in a public space and hold a meeting, press conference, and talk about important issues and organize and solve problems… huh…

I thought that Keith Olbermann had a good idea, too…

If they evict an occupation dressed up as a huge nativity scene, isn’t that a War on Christmas?

but if you put your tent up in a national park and your tent has a sign on it, uh oh,  FREEDOM of SPEECH…

Jingle Bells ringing…

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-van-zandt/democracy-in-america_b_1139463.html

…The simple fact is we do not live in a democracy. Certainly not the kind our Founding Fathers intended. We live in a corporate dictatorship represented by, and beholden to, no single human being you can reason with or hold responsible for anything.

The corporation has but one obligation, which is to increase profits for it’s shareholders by any legal means necessary by the next fiscal quarter.

They have no moral, patriotic, social, environmental, generational or even sustainable responsibility…

We need to eliminate all private finance from the electoral process…

Campaign finance doesn’t need reform. It needs elimination.

To accomplish this we must overturn Buckley v. Valeo, one of the two or three worst decisions in the history of the Supreme Court.

The ruling makes the extraordinary decision that money is protected by the First Amendment…

More money can beat Big money…

Tornado survivor dogs in Alabama

Friends, on the show Pit Bulls and Parolees last night, they showed how tornadoes devastated and killed people and dogs in Tuscaloosa, AL… A dog rescue there, K9 Camp, lost 22 dogs (out of 50+)…  they are in the process of rebuilding the buildings they had, and dogs and humans are now living out of tents…

for me personally, watching the episode, it was intense. One family lost EVERYTHING except each other and they had already been through a lot personally.
They need a lot of assistance… donations of food, treats, leashes, dog bones, crates, kennels, building supplies and cash are welcome and volunteers to help them rebuild.  Please do what you can to help, and please let others in your network know too.  here’s info.

Happy Campers

Have you signed up for dog camp yet? Planning your summer vacation with your pooch?   Canine Getaway in NY is this month but others have dates in July and August and even September (see camps below) and get with the camping program ! Sounds like a lot of fun. Imagine camping with your best friend.

Did you ever go to camp as a kid? I went to day camp and when I became a teen, I went to sleepaway camp near Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains. Camp Somerhill, when I went there, was only for teens. And I made a lot of friends. We  swam, went canoeing, made crafts, sang songs by the campfire, played ball, archery, went bowling and to the movies and went on trips into town and beyond.

There are plenty of places you can visit that are pet friendly, hotels, inns and b&b’s. And places to leave your dog for a dog friendly time away from you.

Now, you and your dog(s) can partake of doggie camp together.  There are a few different summer camps for you and your pooch to choose from.

Canine Camp Getaway of NY will run from June 24-28, 2012 and it is located near Lake George too. It is a unique vacation for dogs and dog lovers, where dogs aren’t just allowed, they’re an integral part of the fun!

This is a dog-friendly vacation, where you can take your dog everywhere from the pool and the hiking trails to the dining room and the bar for nightly “Yappy Hour.” Guests can try all kinds of dog sports– like agility, frisbee, canine freestyle dancing, lure coursing, scent detection, flyball and doggie skateboarding — take classes like Canine CPR, “Barks & Crafts” and Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog preparation and testing, and learn from top veterinarians, trainers and dog nutrition experts, all while having fun with like-minded dog lovers.  Dogs are required to be on leash and at times dogs are put in different groups. Some smaller dogs feel more comfortable with dogs their own size. And individual activities for you and your dog can also be arranged.

This vacation also offers “human-friendly” activities like horseback riding, zumba classes, evening entertainment, gourmet dining and an onsite spa. If you sign up in the next 7 days, get $50 off!

Held at the Roaring Brook Ranch in Lake George, NY, Canine Camp Getaway of NY offers a scenic paradise where you and your dog can get close to nature. With nearly 300 acres, the resort offers plenty of wide open spaces for recharging body, mind and spirit while strengthening the bond with your four-legged best friend.

Located less than two miles from the lake, and surrounded by majestic mountain views and all the glories of nature, the resort is located just 3-1/2 hours from New York City.

There are activities for dogs of all levels, from beginner to advanced…  agility classes, swimming lessons and free swim, lure coursing, flyball, frisbee, scent detection, rally obedience, tricks classes, guided walks, Barks and Crafts, Canine CPR, Doggie Fitness Evaluations, Canine Good Citizen prep classes and testing, Therapy Dogs International prep classes and testing, obedience classes, a Doggie Costume Contest, dog trivia, dog bingo and much more.

Plus, seminars on such topics as Emergency Canine First Aid, how to address various behavioral issues and canine nutrition, among others. Nighttime entertainment include live music, cocktails and dancing in the dog-friendly lounge.  you can do as much or as little as you want.

http://www.caninecampgetaway.com/activities.php

This doggie camp has been happening for the past four years and generally is attended by 70+ dogs and owners says Janice Costa, chief top dog. Single rooms, double rooms and suites are available, and filled on a first-come, first served basis. Rates include lodging, three meals daily (beginning with dinner Sunday evening and ending with breakfast on Thursday), all tips and gratuities and all dog activities. Extra charges apply for alcohol, spa services, horseback riding and photography packages.

http://www.caninecampgetaway.com/

They welcome dogs of all sizes, ages and abilities, as long as they are social with dogs and humans. No formal training or experience is needed. Well behaved dogs may join their humans for meals in the dog-friendly section of the dining room.

Dogs are welcome throughout the premises, from the lounge during our nightly “Yappy Hour,” to the sparkling pool to all evening seminars. For those who want a little private human time, the facility offers an onsite spa, horseback riding, a sauna and an exercise room. A short drive into town offers guests opportunities for boating, golfing and outlet shopping.

Jessie Costa is the Senior Ambassadog

Born in Pennsylvania and dumped in a kill shelter when she got “too big,” Jessie had to overcome some major trust issues with humans when she was first adopted. However, she always enjoyed the company of other animals (even helping to rescue an injured squirrel once), so dog activities became a major part of the socialization process once she found her “fur-ever” home.

Coming from strong working lines, Jessie shared her Mom’s “Type A” personality, and it soon became clear that, like most working dogs, she was happiest when she had a job. Obedience, retrieving balls and running agility initially filled that void, and later, she expanded her “work” to include retrieving medicine, water and the cordless phone on command, as well as working with the elderly.

She welcomes like-minded dogs and dog people to join in the fun and to celebrate that most powerful bond between dog and human.

Lexie Costa the Junior Ambassadog

Part of an “oops litter” from a Black Labrador narcotics dog and a Belgian Malinois protection dog, Lexie comes from strong working lines. However, her joyfully silly personality and love of all things social suggest that somewhere in her lineage, she has equally strong “playing lines,” making her ideally suited for her unofficial job of “doggie cruise director” for Canine Camp Getaway of NY.

A high-energy dog who adores every creature she’s ever met, Lexie loved the idea of hosting a vacation where dogs and humans could spend time together romping, playing, learning, socializing, relaxing, and just having fun.

An inveterate swimmer, she loves pools of all sizes, and would swim in her water dish if she could. Lexie believes the dog-friendly pool is the very best part of Canine Camp Getaway of NY (though she also gets pretty wired up about lure coursing, too).

Glen Highland Farm

Another doggie summer camp getaway for you and your pooch is also in New York at the Glen Highland Farm. A gorgeous 175 acres of rolling countryside, it is a place for dogs and people to join in nature.

Border collies reign supreme at this farm. Since Glen Highland Farm is a year-round Border Collie Rescue, the Camp attracts many herding breeds. About 1/3 of the dogs at camp are border collies.

You have a choice of two different adventures… a six day group camp or you can stay in a tent, RV or cabin with your dog for two nights minimum.

For the six day group camp, Sept. 8-13, they offer an off-leash vacation with a little more ruffing it. There will be only 30-35 other guests here, so there is personalized attention during the day at all the sports and speaker sessions.  People that attend range in age from 25 years to 65+ and come as singles, as couples or with a friend.

Animal communication, tellington touch, energy balancing, doggie massage, homeopathic care and much more are available during the week with guest speakers who share their knowledge and experiences. And, they give you hands-on experience whenever possible.

This is a luxury camping experience with various options to boot. Magnificent tent sites are situated in private spots in the forest and creekside and most importantly, you sleep on comfy Swedish cots off the ground with tents on platforms. Each spacious tent fits two people and two dogs easily with large zippered windows and a screened porch for good airflow. Every tent site has an outdoor lantern for nighttime light as well as fresh water for you and your dog each day,  brought right to your door. There are 13 campsites available. You can also bring your own tent and enjoy the comfort of camping with gear you already know.

You can also choose to stay in the comfort of a rustic cabin. There are two cozy cabins available on The Ridge nestled in the woods, near the kid’s camp. Each cabin provides plenty of room for two people plus their dog or one person with multiple dogs or for anyone who wants to enjoy the cabin fully for themselves and their beloved canine companion.  And, two comfy cottages at the foot of The Ridge – with enough room to sleep 3-4 people with their dogs.

And you can also bring your RV or rent one. There are 11 RV hookups for use at the Farm, situated in a gorgeous 30 acre meadow.

Or you can stay at a local B&B. The Butternut Lodge is located right in the village of Morris, about 2 miles from GHF. There are four bedrooms, with shared full baths, kitchen, dining and living room areas and a sundeck porch. The kitchen is stocked with dishes and cooking utensils if you wish to cook meals for yourself apart from those offered at the camp. Contact Matt Meyers at 607-263-2580.

Delicious catered food will include organic vegetarian dishes as well as humanely raised grain-fed poultry and beef. At GHF, we honor dogs as well as all animals by offering food choices that do not encourage factory farming or cruel processing methods.  If you’re interested in a meal away from the camp,  there are restaurants moments away in Morris or Oneonta. There is no cooking at tent sites due to fire hazards.

Meals for your dog(s) are not provided at the GHF. Most campers enjoy preparing special meals for their dogs and there is access to the Doggie Kitchen. It’s a full kitchen complete with refrigerator, microwave, blender, sink and dishwasher plus it’s dog proof.

Camp Unleashed offers 4-day weekend retreats from May to September in various locations including Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Berkshires in MA and Sequoia, CA…

Camp Sequoia Lake is located near Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and the town of Miramonte, California. At 5,500 feet above sea level, surrounded by large pines and other beauties of nature, Camp Sequoia Lake is on 800 acres of privately owned lake and forest. The lake itself is nearly 3 miles around, the perfect place for you and your dog to play and relax.

Explore the Giant Sequoias on a nature hike, canoe together on the lake, learn new tricks with your dog and try canine musical freestyle. Rates and accommodations vary from sleeping in a tent to a cabin.

Doting pet owners keep pet businesses thriving

According to the American Pet Products Association, spending in the pet industry surged to a record $50.96 billion in 2011. The group expects spending on pets to continue rising to nearly $53 billion this year.

The animal-loving nature of the region, plus the wealthy clientele, has protected the multitude of businesses that cater to pet owners. Whether it’s pet fashion, diet, health or entertainment, there’s a glut of products and services.

Need a dog bowtie? They retail for $24 at pet boutique Diggidy Dog in Carmel. Perhaps you’d like to commission a portrait of your pet — watercolor or photograph? For pet baths, you’ll find $12.95 moisturizing massage goat milk soap bars among the line of Shampooch products made by Infusion Candles and Bath in Monterey.

In Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Marina and Seaside, there are also other pet businesses such as a gym for pets (Zoom Room), pet food and supplies such as chain stores Pet Food Express, Petco and Pet Smart and independently owned shops, pet sitters, doggie daycare providers, groomers, trainers and dog walkers.

In addition, there are numerous pet friendly hotels and inns, restaurants and businesses that welcome pets inside such as the Del Monte Shopping Center.

Have a bread bowl of clam chowder and calamari on Fisherman’s Wharf at Abalonetti or experience early Monterey Mission style ambiance at the Corkscrew Cafe where you and your dog can have a wood fire pizza on the garden patio…On your way out of town, stop at Tarpy’s Roadhouse and order a $27 Angus beef filet served with roasted red potatoes and garden veggies from the dog menu while you enjoy California-country cuisine yourself.

Dogs beat the heat…

Summertime is fun time for both dogs and humans.  But when the temps climb, how can you cool off your hot dogs?

Here’s how some dogs are getting a jump on summer heat and cooling off…

In Rome, dogs eat gelato

http://www.aol.com/video/when-in-rome-dogs-get-gelato-too/517399551/?icid=maing-grid7|main5|video-module|sec3_lnk3|171270

Make your own frozen treats for your dogs

Frosty Paws:

32 oz yogurt
2 mashed banana’s
2 T honey optional
1/4 C Peanut Butter

Freeze it in a ice cube tray and serve to your pup on a hot day. Be careful of any allergies your dog might have.

Pool or Beach pawty

a trip to the beach or pool are definitely cool… but make sure there is some shade or bring some shade with you (a canopy or umbrella) if the temperatures get too high

http://binghamton.ynn.com/content/top_stories/480255/hot-dogs-cool-off-in-corning/

Get out the hose or a kiddie pool for your dog to jump in and refresh themselves

In places like Las Vegas or Arizona, where the temps climb to over 100 degrees, walk your pooches early in the day and after dark

Grass is the word… grass is cooler and better for poochie paws than concrete… let them keep roll

Make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink

Get a cool collar like the Too Cool collar

http://www.calmingcollars.com/digishop/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=8

Let your pooch dig him/herself a hole in the ground in the yard to sit in … the earth cools them off… Cici loves her places in the shade

Set a fan on the floor just for Fido

SIGNS of Dog Dehydration
  • Heavy panting
  • Labored breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Unusual behavior
  • Droopy Lips
  • Lack of Energy
  • Won’t eat or drink

Step 1: To cool down a hot dog know that if your dog has any of the symptoms above, ie, is panting heavily, has a swollen tongue or is lethargic it is probably in distress.

Step 2: Get the dog into the shade as soon as possible to provide immediate relief.

Step 3: Pour cool water onto your dog very slowly, and repeat this every 10 minutes of so until the dog begins to return to normal behavior.

Dogs cool from the bottom up.

Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just the top of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet towel does more good on the bottom of your dog than when laid on the top of its coat.

Never leave your dog alone in a parked car.

The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it is in the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the car due to passersbys or panic from claustrophobia, making dehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure you have water for the dog and keep the AC running.

Step 4: Place the dog in a car that has air conditioning and stay with the dog. If air conditioning is not available fan the dog with a towel or newspaper or feed them ice cubes/chips.

Step 5: If you dog does not respond to these measures in 20 minutes or so, take them to the vet  immediately.

One of the best reasons to take your favorite pooch with you on vacation (even if it is a home staycation) for the Easter or Passover holidays or Spring Break is for the guaranteed exercise you will get with your canine buddy at your side. Here are a few of the fun attractions that you can enjoy with Fido or Fluffy that will give you both a good workout.

Cici loves to zoom around the park every day… zoom zoom zoom… girl dogs just LOVE to run…born to zoom…

1. Tiptoe through the tulips at Mendocino’s  Botanical Gardens

Between the tulips and other flowers, (over 150 varieties), Fido will enjoy a nice stroll with you to the beach. Well-mannered dogs on leashes are always welcome and enjoy free admission.

2. Romp amongst the waves and practice the dog paddle together at Carmel by the sea’s Carmel Town Beach. There are always plenty of dogs splashing, swimming, zooming and chasing one another.  Plus the walk into and out of the beach will get all of your endorphins flowing.

3 Go kayaking …  You can paddle up Big River in a canoe from Catch a Canoe & Bicycles, Too, located at Highway 1 & Comptche-Ukiah Rd, Mendocino, 707-937-0273.
